Jakarta. Each person is recommended to perform regular physical activity in a week, but for people who have cancer there are 4 types of sports or body work can help.
“Cancer patients are also recommended to exercise, but how they do it might be different depending on their disease and the treatment they have done,” said Josie Gardiner, a personal trainer and author of ‘The Breast Cancer Survivor’s Fitness Plan’, as quoted by FoxNews, Tuesday (26 / 4 / 2011).
Gardiner said, the treatment of chemotherapy and radiation are cumulative, which means more and more treatments will tired them. Before determining the physical exercise, the patients has to determine the scale of fatigue they felt from 0 (no fatigue) to 4 (very tired).
“You have to listen to your body. If you feel really tired, you should not do sports, but if just feel a little tired then whatever exercise you do is better than nothing,” he said.
There are 4 types of physical exercise that can help cancer patients :
Aerobic
Aerobic exercise such as walking, cycling and running can keep the heart rate, increases muscle mass, decrease fat and increase metabolism. It’s because of maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the risk of developing cancer or recurrent.
Weight training can also help people feel better during cancer treatment and improve recovery process after surgery. However, cancer patients may not have the energy to exercise 30 minutes a day, so it is enough to do exercise about 10 minutes. Walking is a safe exercise for people who have done cancer treatment.
Strength training
Chemotherapy can cause a woman to lose bone density faster, so strength training can increase muscle and against the loss of muscle mass. Therefore doing strength training will help a person maintain bone density. But if you want to do weight training, you should consult your physician first.
Balance exercises
Some drugs used for cancer treatment can disrupt the balance, and for people who do chemotherapy could break their bone with just one fall accident. Therefore a balance exercises should become a routine part of sports.
Simple exercises like walking in a narrow place, putting one foot in front of others (such as walking on a tight rope), lifting one heel and hold it or stand on one leg for 60 seconds can improve balance.
Stretching exercises
Cancer patients who just performed an operation may feel weakness in certain areas of their body, therefore stretching exercises can help strengthen that area so it could regain its mobility. However, patients should consult their physician first before undergoing stretching exercises.
