Ohio. For the sake of saving the lives of cancer that raged in the thigh bone, a boy in Ohio, America had to be operated upside down his legs. Thighs to his knees to be cut, then the calves feet up into the thigh and ankle to knee with the soles of the feet should be facing backwards instead of forwards.
If you look at the condition of his feet now, maybe a lot of people think the surgeon has done mal practice because of leg surgery in reverse with ankle and right foot facing backward.
But it is not a mal practice physician error or medical accidents. It is a ‘bridge‘ for Dugan Smith (13 years) free of cancer and allow to save most of his leg.
Dugan new right foot just knee-high now. Then because the rear-facing, feet can be bent so as to facilitate wear a prosthesis or a prosthetic aids.
The incident began when 10-year-old Dugan who fell from a tree and broke tree. But while undergoing treatment, doctors discovered a malignant tumor instead of the softball-sized on his thigh.
He was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer is extremely rare in children. Inevitably, Dugan leg to be amputated. But doctors give inverted foot surgery option if you want to save most of his leg.
“The only best way is by letting his feet behind,” explains Amy Miller, Dugan’s mother, as reported by Dailymail on Monday (8/15/2011).
This operation involves cutting the top and bottom of the knee to remove the cancer, before flipping and reattach his lower leg.
Now, calf Dugan is the thigh, ankle joint acts as a fake knee and ankle do the job the rest.
And more importantly, free from foot apart, with feet inverted Dugan can still play baseball as usual.
